The Japan Robot Association (JARA) has recently released sales statistics for the year 2022, revealing a record high in total sales of Japanese-made robots at $824.71 million, a 3.1% increase from the previous year.

Notably, there has been a significant rise in the use of robots in clean room environments, and applications beyond assembly have also experienced substantial growth.

Here is a breakdown of the shipment volume and value by application:

  • Clean room:
    Shipments: 41,862 units (up 25.1%)
    Shipment value: $122.27 million (up 24.8%)

  • Welding:
    Shipments: 46,954 units (+1.0%)
    Shipment value: $92.12 million (up 6.0%)

  • Assembly:
    Shipments: 43,092 units (down 11.6%)
    Shipment value: $82.09 million (up 23.2%)

  • Machining:
    Shipments: 15,461 units (74.4% increase)
    Shipment value: $22.1 million (77.8% increase)

  • Material handling:
    Shipments: 77,454 units (up 11.5%)


Furthermore, in terms of industries, while the automotive sector witnessed a decline in both shipment volume and value, the electrical machinery industry experienced significant growth. The electrical machinery industry expanded to 20,707 units (up 10.5%), and the machinery industry reached 5,164 units (up 22.1%). The demand for robots is expanding beyond automobiles and electrical machinery, extending to sectors like metal products, food and beverage, tobacco, and feed.

    Shipments: 12,579 units (down 6.9%)
    Shipment value: $40.12 million (down 11.3%)

  • Electrical machinery industry:
    Shipments: 27,070 units (+10.5%)

  • Machinery industry:
    Shipments: 5,164 units (up 22.1%)
    Shipment value: $17.07 million (up 19.5%)

  • Metal products industry:
    Shipments: 2,734 units (up 15.1%)

  • Food and beverage, tobacco, and feed industries:
    Shipments: 883 units
